The Goji berry plant can be found in abundance in areas of Tibet, Mongolia and parts of China. Contrary to the misconception, Goji berries are different from wolfberries. While the plants where they come from look similar, the taste makes all the difference. The Goji berry is quite sweet while the wolfberry, on the other hand is bitter. There are also higher levels of juice that can be obtained from a Goji berry compared to a wolfberry.
Due to the growing popularity of the goji berry, it must now be purchased at a price of thirty to fifty dollars per pound. But if you consider the benefits that this fruit can bring you, cost is a small price to pay. If you are considering growing it in your own garden, then you should be delighted to hear that it grows easily and can withstand extreme temperatures, even those below zero in the winter and above a hundred in the summer.
The Best Conditions for the Goji Berry Plant
The Goji berry plant will grow best where it receives a lot of sunlight. While it will grow best in soil that is well-drained, it will still thrive in different settings. Its only downfall would be if it was placed in soil that is continually wet and moisture-laden since this may weaken the plant and cause it to die.
You do not need to wait long for the goji plant to bear fruit, since they usually appear in the second year. However, the full fruit-bearing capability of the goji plant will only arise in the fourth to fifth years. The small Goji plant will now have grown to a height of about eight to ten feet tall.
Aside from the fruit, the Goji plant will also bear exquisite flowers that are colored purple and weight in a single tree. Eventually, the bright red berries that characterize the Goji plant will grow along with these.
If you pick the Goji berries right off the plant, then you run the risk of oxidizing them and causing them to turn black. Instead, you must shake the plant until the berries fall off or use a pair of clean gloves to pick them off the plant.
Once you have harvested the berries, then you can turn them into juice or eat them fresh. It is recommended that you take a serving in the morning and another at night. Even if you are not suffering from any known ailments, you will still be able to see improvements in your overall health within a period of a month. You will generally feel more satisfied about your life, sleep better, and be more alert after you have been taking the fruits from the goji berry plant for quite some time.
