Goji Berry Plant - How to Grow One of Your Own

AUTHOR: Vivian Hanson

Goji Berry Plant

The Goji berry plant's scientific name is Lycium Barbarum. The system of roots for every goji berry plant is extensive, since it has had to learn to get used to the mountainous terrain of the Himalayan region where it is known to grow in abundance.

However, over the last few years, the goji plant can now be grown all over the world, preferably in temperate instead of tropical countries. There are even nurseries in Utah where the Goji plant is grown, since it can even survive through the conditions of drought that the state often experiences. Although the plant can still live under the shade, ideal conditions for the plant include a lot of sunlight.

Goji Berry Plant - General Information

When classifying the Goji berry plant, it is seen neither as a bush or a vine exclusively. While the plant comes from a bushy center, it can be trained to grow on trellises so that they will look like vines over time. If you are planning to grow the Goji plant in your backyard or own your own plant nursery, you should take extra care to prune the plant especially when it reaches its maximum height at about eight to ten feet. For vines, you may wait until it reaches about twelve feet from the bushy center before you trim it.

The best motivation for regular pruning and trimming of the Goji plant is because this will actually be advantageous to the growth of the Goji berries. Once you see the plant flowering, then you can be assured that the fruits will come very soon. You will recognize the flowers by their purple and white color and trumpet-like shape while the berries will be small and red. Even until the first heavy snowfall in winter, the Goji plant will continue to bear fruit, which are best eaten right after they are shaken off the plant.

Although the Goji plant is not very picky when it comes to the weather, it can still be grown indoors. When your Goji plant is placed inside your house, make sure that it is placed in an area where there is strong sunlight or you must provide an artificial light source for it. The plant should be able to get at least eight hours of sunlight on a daily basis for it to grow well.

You will need to resort to self-pollination if you want to continue growing more Goji plants on your own. All you have to do is allow one flower to touch another flower so that the pollen can be transferred. Since there will not be any insects when the plant is grown indoors, the pollination has to be done by hand.
