Wholesale Goji berries are available fresh or dried from many sources across the United States, which charge anywhere from as little as $6 for half a kilo to over $100 for the same amount.
Why the discrepancy? For one thing, the prices of Goji or Lycium berries, and products derived from them, were jacked up by the hype generated by hard-sell marketers who claimed all sorts of benefits – some of which have remained unsupported by scientific research.
The best source for Goji produce is probably your local organic grocer. Every state has, at least, a few organic groceries or herbal stores, although many do not offer Goji fruits wholesale only commercially produced Goji juice (most likely not pure Goji).
If you find a source of fresh Lycium berries, you are probably fortunate enough to live in one of the few states that has them, gauging by the number of grocers that advertise offering nothing more than dried berries or commercial Goji products.
Where to Buy Wholesale Goji Berries
If you live in a state like California, for example, you are more likely to find wholesale Lycium berries, because at least a hundred herbal stores do business there.
If you live in Nevada or Nebraska, on the other hand, it is unlikely that you will find wholesale berries in the handful of herbal stores that exist in these states. You are more likely to find them in states such as New York or Florida that have over 60 natural food stores, or Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Washington that have over 50 stores.
You can turn these up by doing a browser search for directories of natural or Chinese herbal stores in your area. You may also buy the berries in trail mix form, which are sold at such stores as Trader Joe's.
However, the best sources are still the colleges that grow organic produce, such as the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, which offers fresh Lycium berries at $6 for half a kilo at their store along Grand Street in New York City; or from Prescott College's Wolfberry Farm in Arizona (although the farm was named after the pale Lycium variety called Lycium pallidum).
No scientific studies have, as yet, differentiated the benefits derived from the different kinds of Lycium. Moreover, Goji is indeed used interchangeably with wolfberry. Any websites that purport Goji to have some unique exotic benefit are probably just trying to sell their products.
Also be wary of websites that claim to sell wholesale Goji berries, but later tell you they have run out. It is best to check by phone and get an assurance that you will really be able to buy a bag of fresh or dried fruit at an acceptable price. If you get there and are unable to purchase a bag at the agreed price for ANY reason, walk out.
