Organic Goji Juice Products - Things You Should Know

AUTHOR: Patricia Stanleys

Organic Goji Juice

Organic Goji juice need not be tedious to produce. All you really need are some good quality berries (i.e., organically grown, sulfur-free, pesticide-free) and a juicer.

The claims of certain marketers of commercial Goji products that the berries for your juice need to be any of the following is nothing but hype, which is meant to (a) explain a high price point, and (b) convince you to buy from them.

  1. Himalayan-quality – Whatever THAT means! Berries from the Goji plant or Lycium barbarum from Tibet, China, Mongolia, New York, Utah, and Arizona will most likely contain the same nutrients. The only difference will occur if they were fumigated with chemicals.
  2. Harvested based on certain criteria – As in? Ripeness? Obviously. Shape or Color? One is skeptical if certain shapes or colors are practical criteria for multilevel marketing businesses, which are what the enterprises that claim "certain criteria" are!
  3. Verified through a spectral signature – Does this so-called "fingerprint" have any scientific basis? Does it really affect the berry's nutrients? Unlikely. Moreover, all this talk about keeping the berries untouched by human hands lest they loose their power sounds like marketing hype.
  4. Testing to ensure no pesticide residue – This is said to be done to the pureed berries. So the berries were not organically grown? That the Goji plants were fumigated with chemicals should be more cause for concern than if they have the right "spectral signature" or not!

Many of these commercial Goji juice products claim to be organic. What the buyer should know is that most of these use preservatives, such as potassium sorbate. Furthermore, these products are generally not 100% Goji juice, but also contain apple juice, grape juice, etc.

It is also difficult to be certain just what quality of berries were used. If they make no bones about hyping their claims, they can certainly state their berries are 100% organic.

The best assurance of organic produce is to know the grower (e.g., if you were to grow the Goji plant yourself) or to source it from a reputable grower (e.g., a college or university).

What Is Organic Goji Juice Good For?

In Chinese herbal medicine, Goji juice is used as a blood tonic, improving circulation through its effect on the endocrine system. It is also known as an antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-febrile.

Some Goji juice claims are true, especially as they can be proven to take place due to the high concentrations of certain vitamins (e.g., Vitamin A) and minerals (e.g., Potassium).

However, unscrupulous Goji marketers have taken to claiming that certain compounds exist in Goji juice (e.g., Cyperone) just so they can make another additional claim (Cyperone has been used in the treatment of cervical cancer) – quite needlessly adding to the many benefits organic Goji juice already provides.
